Understanding UAE Labour Law

The UAE labour market is governed by Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations, which came into effect on February 2, 2022. This comprehensive legislation replaced the previous Labour Law (Federal Law No. 8 of 1980) and introduced significant reforms to protect both employees and employers in the private sector.

Key provisions of the current UAE Labour Law include standardized employment contracts, clear termination procedures, end-of-service gratuity entitlements, annual leave allocations, sick leave provisions, and anti-discrimination protections. The law applies to all private sector employees in the UAE, including those working in free zones (with some exceptions for DIFC and ADGM which have their own employment regulations).

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) oversees the implementation and enforcement of labour law in the UAE. Employees can file complaints through MOHRE channels if they believe their rights have been violated, and the ministry provides dispute resolution services before cases escalate to labour courts.
